Brandt stepped back as Bartholomew Sanderson stepped into the hallway from his office and pulled the door shut behind him.

“Where are we headed today?” Brandt asked as he walked beside the manager down the hall and toward the stairs. It wasn’t easy continuing this back-and-forth work between management and the main refinery. Some of his friends had begun questioning his sporadic absences. He’d be glad when he could finally make the switch and put all of this behind him. Just one more week.

Sanderson tugged on the sleeves of his chambray shirt and adjusted the string tie at his neck. It must be an important meeting for him to take such care with his appearance.

“The owner of a new bell-casting shop recently moved to Detroit and is interested in the copper we produce.” He walked with a purpose, his carriage tall and erect. “Your father tells me it could mean a great deal of money invested in our refinery and his company should this gentleman like what we have to say.”

“I recall Father mentioning a man who had been hired to cast some new bells for some of the churches here in the city as well as near city hall.” He preceded Sanderson down the stairs and cocked his head over his left shoulder. “Is this the same man?”

“One and the same. That is, the caster isn’t the same man as the one we’re going to meet,” he corrected, his words beating a staccato rhythm matching his descent on the steps. “This man is the owner of the casting facility.”

Brandt pressed down the latch and pushed open the heavy door, holding it for Sanderson, who exited a moment later. “And he makes all the decisions about where to get his supplies.”

Sanderson nodded. “Exactly.”

“Well, there aren’t exactly too many options here in Detroit. If he doesn’t agree to partner with us for his needs, he’ll have to import them from Canada or even as far away as the Locks up north.”

Somehow Brandt had a hard time believing this owner would even consider the expense such a decision would incur. They produced the purest copper and copper elements within a one-hundred-mile radius. The man would be a fool not to invest with them.

“From what I’ve heard, he’s been quite diligent in his research and investigation of the available refineries in the area. This meeting is likely nothing more than a formality, and your father asked me to bring you along for the experience.”

Ah, now the truth came out. This might be a bona fide business appointment, but he was only included to learn more about this end of his father’s dealings. Brandt didn’t mind, though. Felicity had told him earlier in the week that the factory had hired some new workers and the shifts had changed. So she was working fewer hours as the supervisors planned out a new schedule. He would have much preferred sharing lunch with her again, but since she wasn’t working today, gaining more understanding of the job he’d soon assume suited him just fine.
